An Appearance of Neptune

The United States is getting hit with a strong Neptune transit now and through the rest of the year, and also in 2018, as you can see in the graphic ephemeris below.  This aspect is a square of Neptune to the Ascendant of the United States.  This square was quite close in the summer of last year and will have its first exact aspect next week, and the aspect will be exact again or very close in the Fall and Winter of this year and early 2018.  The black  arrow indicates where the purple line  representing transiting Neptune crosses the horizontal dashed gold line representing the natal Ascendant near the center vertical axis representing March 17.

Two years of Neptune Square the US Ascendant

The United States is already seeing one of the effects of this strong Neptune influence, and when it is exact next week we will possibly see others.  The political establishment, which includes the major media such as the newspapers the New York Times and the Washington Post, and cable news channels CNN and MSDNC, have seized on the meme of Russia controlling the Trump administration after having determined who would be the President of the United States.  These are extremely serious charges, and nothing like them have been made before, even in the dark days of McCarthyism  in the late Forties and early Fifties, though the John Birch Society once charged President Eisenhower with being a Communist agent, but that was considered a laughable minority view.  These charges basically claim that the current President is an agent of Russia and its always demonized leader Vladimir Putin.  Under this rush to judgement all manner of accusations are possible, and all are believed if it suits the narrative.  This is a prime example of the pervasive influence of Neptune.  Neptune, remember, especially when in a hard aspect, quoting Ebertin, rules confusion, deception, fraud.

But coming up next week, when the aspect is exact for the first time, are two important but perhaps overlooked items on the National Calendar.  The first happens on March 15, when the suspension of the National Debt, put together by the then President Obama, and the then House Speaker John Boehner, in 2015  expires, so that the government can no longer borrow money.  All those checks people depend on from the government may no longer exist after that date. This seems like a sure recipe for confusion.

But a few days after that something else is expected to happen.  At least everyone, including the person most involved, Janet Yellen head of the Federal Reserve, suggest it will happen.  When this happens it will be the third time the prime interest rate has been raised since the Great Recession, the first time being in December 2015 by just a quarter of a percent; then again in December of last year it was boosted by a modest half percent. Evidently Yellen believes that the economy is doing so well we can “afford” to raise the rate. This is an end to the qualitative easing in the United States that supported many large businesses after the Great Recession of 2008.  That event will be the raising of the basic lending rate a bank uses to borrow money, which should trickle down to the interest rates for credit cards, home mortgages, and many other things that involve borrowing money.  Not only that, but we can expect several more rate increases in 2017 and 2018.  I would expect the stock market, which has been going gangbusters since the election, to start to moderate its (irrational?) exuberance.  If this rate increase happens it is expected to change many things outside the United States as well.  Suddenly there will be capital outflows from countries in the European Union and from China, expected soon to be the biggest economy in the world, into the United States.  The United States dollar will be then stronger against foreign currency.  But there is an important reason to raise the rate: when an economic downturn hits the Fed reacts by lowering the prime rate.  If the rate is already very low, the room to maneuver is very tight.  Some analysts suggest that the country has waited too long after the Great Recession for the first hike.  But again there will be confusion.  Stay tuned.

Exact Neptune Square Ascendant

If we look at this chart for the exact square we see a number of interesting things.  The Sun is at the nadir, opposite the Midheaven.  This can be read symbolically as that the energies of the entity — the USA — are at their lowest ebb of the year (the highest would be six months later in September).  Transiting Mars is sesquiquadrate natal Neptune and semisquare natal Mars, which reflects the Mars-Neptune square in the natal chart, which is accentuated at this time.  Mars square Neptune is always problematic.  It suggests disturbed or misdirected energies; sometimes (??) the country makes actions that work against its own best interests.  With all the Mars-Neptune energies at this time, the country may take rash actions or make incorrect decisions.  Saturn is in the first house so the USA hasn’t totally recovered its self-confidence. All of this suggests a very Neptunian period with everyone spouting their own theories of what is happening/will happen.  The mass media will certainly be caught of in this Neptunian fog.

Rationalism and Damned Facts

To be thought “rational” is considered the ultimate good.  If you are “irrational” you are considered wrong, not worthy of mature conversation.   Rationalism is considered a product of the Enlightenment which has changed our politics and made civilization more sane.  To reject the learning of the Enlightenment is considered just wrong.  Rationalism is ruled by the planet Uranus.  Considered a higher octave of Mercury, it was discovered in 1781, during the Enlightenment, and the first planet discovered in modern times.  It is not normally visible without a telescope.  The previous years, in Europe the Dark Ages, were a product of Neptune: irrationality.  While the Europeans were suffering under the so-called Dark Ages, considered the period between the Fall of Rome, also rational, and the Renaissance, other civilizations, such as those in Persia, India, and China, were not suffering under a Dark Age and continued to be rational, but they still had a element of irrationality.  But in the 1000 years preceding the Sixteenth Century, there was much “irrationality”  – symbolized by Neptune – sweeping the Western World, while much of the rest of the planet still adhered to some measure of Rationality, thus keeping that alive while it was hidden in the West.

But rationality in the West (re)starts in the Sixteenth Century.  The Polish mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus is considered a father of modern science with his theory of the heliocentric solar system that was published at his death in 1543.  But the idea did not catch on for fifty years, partly since he went against the popular notions of how the Universe worked as put forth by the Greek philosopher Aristotle, and also against the teachings of the Catholic Church. This breakthrough started with the Uranus-Pluto conjunction of the late Sixteenth Century.

Five men are considered the fathers of modern science: Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Johann Kepler, Galileo, and Newton.  The first four were astrologers (but many like to claim that they didn’t believe the stuff, but merely had to make a living) and Newton was an alchemist. And in fact if you examine the  early writings in the scientific community there is plenty of room for “non-rational” ideas.  It was only in the Eighteenth Century that a more orthodox position was developed.

The discovery of the first planet by scientific means – a telescope – was Uranus in 1781  by amateur astronomer William Hershel.  Below is the chart for that discovery on March 13, 1781.  Interestingly, the  planet Uranus in late Gemini is square the Sun, representing the day of discovery.  One reason Uranus is associated with Revolution is that it was discovered between the American and the French Revolutions.  Uranus also represents Rationalism, and by the time of its discovery, rationalism had come to dominate the Western world.  One symbol of this increasing dominance of rationalism was shown by the French philosopher Rene Descartes, who famously said “I think, therefore I am” and gave us Cartesian mathematics and a Cartesian world-view.  Thus began the rise to dominate the world of a more materialist, mechanistic way of thinking.  The world has been disenchanted (entzauberung in the original German), as German sociologist Mex  Weber famously suggested, and it is leading to our downfall.  We need to become more irrational, to re-enchant the world.  This, I believe, will be a project of the next 500 years.

Discovery of Uranus

What I contend is that the last 500 years in the Western World has seen increasing rationality, and that trend is now over.  What we must do is combine the rationality  of Uranus and the irrationally of Neptune into a synthesis.  We can see how the increasing rationality of the last 500 years has come close to destroying the Earth, and attempts to offer a totally rational solution  to these crises will only fail, party because the rational attempt to reduce the crises to a simple, rational solution is irrational.  As mentioned, we now live in a totally disenchanted world, and as the rulers become increasingly technocratic  and machines of all kinds more dominate the world, this trend has become overwhelming.  Nature is something that people in the West, and most assuredly the United States, see only on their screens, a mode becoming more dominant since the Uranus-Neptune conjunction of the early Nineties, to be discussed more at a future date.  Extreme rationalism is killing us all.

There are many facts out in the field which are what the American writer of the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century Charles Fort called “damned facts” and he collected many of them in his books, one of which is called The Book of the Damned.  Damned facts are those that can not be explained by Rational means, they are thus arational.  There are many such events, and there are books and television shows that collect such damned facts, those that can not be explained by science. As far as this blog is concerned, the most important and obvious damned fact is astrology.  Much as we want to believe it, astrology can not be explained by science as it is presently constructed.  Thus, according to many scientists, astrology can not be true.  They occasionally sign letters condemning the belief in astrology as bunk.  When once asked to sign such a letter, Carl Sagan refused because he had not studied astrology.  Would it be that others were so honest.  Currently, it appears scientists are just ignoring astrology, hoping that it will go away.

Scientists consistently disbelieve – that is a mild term for it – in astrology.  I think part of this strong feeling is their realization that if astrology were true, the whole nature of the Universe, something they believe strongly in, would be undermined.   Astrology can not possibly be true in the Universe that they know.  I think that in this way they are more realistic that the astrologers who believe that astrology is a science in the narrow terms that are used today, and that eventually Science will recognize that.  They, the astrologers, don’t realize that astrology strongly suggests that the Universe is much stranger that we know, and perhaps is much stranger that we can know.  There is a new paradigm out there to be discovered, but as Thomas Kuhn famously suggested in his The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, this new paradigm won’t be accepted until the believers in the old paradigm die off.

Probably the most statistically convincing display of the meaning of the planets in astrological terms was demonstrated by research and a series of books by the husband and wife team of Michel and Francoise  Gauguelin in the Fifties and Sixties.  (Full disclosure:   I once took a course in statistics from Francoise). The full results can be found in their books (such as Cosmic Influences on Human Behavior) or online sources.  Essentially what they found was there was a Mars, Jupiter, Moon, and Saturn effect determined by the position of one of these planets in the birth charts of prominent individuals.  These statisticians lived in Europe, and many of those countries have better and longer recorded birth times than does the United States; the Gauquelins would spend their vacations gathering birth data and constructing birth charts.  They found that individuals prominent in certain fields tended to have certain planets placed in certain locations – such as just above the Ascendant – much great than by chance.  While in most experiments if something happens that is likely by chance only 1% of the time, that occurrence is not considered random but connected to something else; in the Gauquelin research, they found the likelihood of their result being by chance were 1 million to one or smaller.

This was very controversial, especially to scientists, since it proves by statistics something that is impossible, and many attempts were made to prove the Gauquelin results wrong.  One famous case was called “(S)tar Baby” wherein scientists were caught fudging the results to make the Gauquelins look bad.

They found a “Mars Effect” for soldiers and athletes, and in fact both those types of people use Mars – directed energy –- more than your average individuals.  The Jupiter effect was found in  politicians and actors, both of which need to be public and extroverted (Ronald Reagan shows the Jupiter effect), and a Saturn effect was found in scientists;  in fact, many scientists, more than average, are notoriously Saturnine, which may be read as introverted, not publicly effervescence, sort of the opposite of Jupiter; and the Moon was found prominent in writers and poets.

A prominent Mars in athletes and soldiers certainly corresponds to the astrological symbolism of the planet Mars in the birth-chart.  And astrologer/composer Gustav Holst called the section of his work The Planets about Mars “The Bringer of War”.  And this meaning of the planet Mars derives from the mythological meaning of the Roman God Mars.  And this no doubt derives from the fact that Mars is a red planet, and red was the color of blood.  There is no possible way that this connection can be explained by any possible scientific theory.  It is totally impossible.  But as was said in a much different context, by someone who was also an astrologer – though this fact is often covered up – “and still it moves”, or if you prefer the original Italian, eppur si muove.

This impossible association must be rejected.  But there is a movement among some to expand the scientific field with ideas from ancient mysticism.  One of the first books to explore to topic after the War was The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra, first published in 1975.  These ideas were an outgrowth of the Sixties – see How the Hippies Saved Physics by David Kaiser for details  about the beginnings of this movement.  Many other people have explored the topic since then, often combining the ideas of quantum mechanics with mysticism and ancient esoteric beliefs.  But astrology seems the clearest example that the Universe works in ways beyond what is assumed by the modern belief system, which I am calling Rationalism.  Thus it must be  rejected as irrational.

The Dance of the Decades

Many years ago I was researching astrology in a college library, and came across a Persian book about astrological cycles.  In most college libraries, only a historical treatise on astrology would be allowed in, though I knew the librarian at a different college library and she ordered some books by Dane Rudhyar and Marc Edmund Jones for the college library she worked in so there are differences.   This Persian  book described the Jupiter-Saturn cycle, from conjunction to the next conjunction, and associated that cycle with the rise and fall of kings.

That Jupiter-Saturn cycle is still considered important, with the phenomena known as “Tecumseh’s Curse” that bedeviled Presidents.   Supposedly this “Curse” says that every president elected during a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction would die while in office.

Jupiter take twelve years  to orbit the Sun, spending about one year in each sign, and Saturn takes almost 30 years for its cycle.  But what we are talking about is called the synodic cycle, that is the period from conjunction of two planets to the next conjunction.  This is similar to the period between a New Moon, which is a conjunction of the Moon and the Sun, until the next New Moon.  This period is different that the time it takes the Moon to revolve around the Earth, because in that time  the Sun has moved about one-twelfth of the distance along its orbit.   The period between the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn are about twenty years, and it recent times  this conjunction has occurred approximately with the start of an even decade, which starts in a years either ending with zero or one, depending on your view of the beginning of a century and the fact that there is no year zero.

ju1sa1682ju1sa1981
Here are two chart for the first Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of a cycle.  In one case this occurs in 1682  and the next  case in 1981.  Even though these two charts are 300 years apart, the both occur at the beginning of their respective decades.   The third  example is the Jupiter-Saturn opposition (shown below) following the last conjunction shown.  This opposition occurs in 1990, the beginning of the “odd” decade.

Thus the Curse of Tecumseh applied to the Presidents elected in 1840 — William Henry Harrison,  who got sick  at his very long inaugural — it was a cold March in Washington and he wore no head covering, feeling it would make him look old — address and died a month later — 1860 — Abraham Lincoln  who was killed at the beginning of his second term — 1880 — James Garfield, assassinated by a “deranged office seeker” — 1900 — William McKinley, who was shot by a “anarchist”  — 1920, Warren Harding who died of “cerebral hemorrhage” three years into his term — 1940, Franklin Roosevelt who died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the beginning of his fourth term — 1960, John Kennedy, who was shot by a lone gunman — 1980, Ronald Reagan,  who  was shot by a deranged gunman again.  But wait, Reagan did not die of his wounds.  I’ve expressed earlier that I think that John Lennon took the bullet for Ronald Reagan.  Astrologers have a theory to explain why the conjunction of 1980 was different, such as that it occurred in a different element than all other conjunctions that resulted in deaths.  Then there is the non-death of George Bush elected in 2000.  But was he really elected?  Maybe Al Gore should have died.   But this trip through the past is merely to illustrated the notoriety given to the Jupiter Saturn conjunction.

In this scheme the Jupiter-Saturn synodic cycle can be compared to the Sun-Moon cycle.  That cycles starts at the New Moon, and then there is the waxing moon until it is Full, and then the  Sun is opposite the Moon (as seen from the earth, of course) and that is followed by the waning Moon, until the next New Moon and the process starts all over again.  The waxing moon, symbolically the growth of a cycle, reaching its culmination at the  Full Moon, and then under the waning moon the loose ends of the previous waxing moon are gathered together in preparation of a new cycle to start at the next New Moon.  The cycle is described completely in Dane Runhyar’s The Lunation Cycle.

We can see the Jupiter-Saturn synodic cycle in the same way, but applying to mundane affairs.  The cycle starts with the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, which starts near the beginning of an even decade, the waxing period occurs during that decade, and the “Full Moon” happens at the Jupiter-Saturn opposition at the start of an odd decade, and then the waning period goes on during that decade in preparation of the next Jupiter-Saturn conjunction at the start of the next even decade.  The various happenings of each decade are influenced by other things that happen during that decade, obviously, but looking at the waxing waning cycle gives us an overview of that decade.  Below I will discuss examples of decades starting with the turn of the Twentieth Century.    Notice that that are also other thing that happen:  The Uranus-Pluto conjunction was during an waxing decade, while the equally important Uranus-Neptune conjunction  happened in an waning decade, which may be one reason that that decade is not as highly considered.  Also World War one was in an waning decade but World War Two was in an waxing decade. So this Jupiter-Saturn cycle just sets the tone for a given decade.

As discussed previously the decade of the 1900s was filled with much change.  This decade was the beginnings of the modern world.  Many important astrological  events happened, including two cardinal crossings by outer planets, Uranus and Neptune; Pluto would make a Cardinal crossing in the next decade.  The was also the midpoint configuration — Uranus = Neptune/Pluto — in that decade, with at one point Uranus at 0 Capricorn.  In the United States this was the Progressive Decade, and there were many anarchists movements throughout the world.

The beginning of the next decade contained much of he change from the first decade, but there was also buildup for war.  One forerunner of this was the two Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913.  The Ottoman Empire — the Empire of  Turkey —  which had existed for 600 years, was slowly unraveling  and these wars were attempts by various Balkan counties to break away and defeat the crumbling Ottoman Empire.  This was a prelude to the First World War that dominated the second decade of the Twentieth Century and shaped the upcoming history,

The third decade, the decade of the 1920s, happened directly after the end of Word War I, which saw the breakup of the Ottoman Empire, forming many countries of the Middle East, such as Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and  Israel, which are so much in the news today.  Germany had its first democratic government.  In the United States the Twenties are well known for prohibition  and the rise of the bootleggers (leading to organized crime)  and stock market rise.

The  Thirties, on the other hand, saw world wide depression – called the Great Depression because it was beyond what the world  had  witnessed the past few hundred years, and the rise of fascist movements, mentioned here in Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan.  Wars were breaking out as Japan invaded China and Germany invaded Czechoslovakia.  The harsh behavior of  Japan in China gave rise to a nascent Communist Revolution.

The decade of the Forties saw the outbreak of World War II, which would prove to be much  more  deadly than the first one.  Like the first one, this  world war would ultimately change the shape of the world.  The war ended  half way through the decade, and the remainder of the decade was spent sorting out the changes to the world made by the war.  This saw the first change of the GDP per capita rate of growth of the world in 120 years.

The Fifties  were the waning decade of the Forties, and they are known as “boring”.   Nothing much is considered as happening during this decade, which of course  is very untrue, but the reputation  remains.  There were  no big wars, as in the previous decade. And there was much recovery in many countries that had been ravished by the long war.  In the United States, however, there had been no destruction since the war had conveniently been fought elsewhere, and so that the country embarked on a Cold War against one of its allies during the previous war, which served as a major boost to the defense industries that had seen great promotion during the war of the previous decade.

Next comes the seventh decade of the Twentieth Century, that mythical time known as the Sixties.  This  decade was both a waxing decade and saw  the first outer planet conjunction of the century, so  it was doubly  blessed or cursed.  It also followed the decade of the Fifties, which had an unfortunate reputation, so it couldn’t help but be different.  Also  there was a big demographic shift.  Many people were born after men returned from the Second World War, and by this decade they started to be old enough they they could influence society just by their numbers.  This was the so-called Baby Boom generation.

The Seventies were a waning decade, and so bound to  be a let down form the previous waxing decade.  This decade saw the first warning — with the oil shocks — that everything wasn’t hunky dory and that natural resources that we expected to last forever were indeed finite.  To accentuate this idea, the book Limits of Growth was published in 1973 in an attempt to cause a change in our thinking.

At the end of the Seventies we saw another midpoint complex, this was Uranus = Neptune/Pluto, and the responses  to that midpoint colored the decade of the Eighties.  The world saw leaders Margret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan brought to power and dominate the world scene, even though a reformer by the name of Mikhail Gorbachev  rose to  power in the Soviet Union, and, as the only one of those three still alive, could have brought some needed changes to his country and the world, but it was not to be.

The Nineties, which will be discussed in more details later, was a  waning decade but it had the second outer planet conjunction of the Twentieth Century. The  big event of this decade was the rise of the World Wide Web, which ultimately lead  to the Dot Com Bust that marked the end of the decade.

The first decade of the Twenty-First Century, and also the first decade of a new millennium, was marked by the rise of terrorism, which was never seen as a response  by third  world countries, so long under the thumb of first world countries, to the actions of those first world counties.  The book Blowback by Chalmers Johnson, published in 1999, discusses this idea in great detail

The second decade of this new century, the decade we are in now, saw further responses and aftermaths to the War on Terror that had highlighted the previous decade.  People also came to realize that the climate was changing in ways not helpful for human life, but for the most part the world’s leaders just talked about the problems.   Solutions were suggested that may have worked if proposed in 1980, when the first hints of the problems of growth were suggested, but that had  been decades previous.

The next decade is a waxing decade, and we will see changes, either positive or negative, happen at a greatly increasing rate, as discussed previously.

Let’s look at some charts for the recent Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions/opposition.  Do they suggest anything about the upcoming decade?  Perhaps.

ju1sa1960

The Sixties

In the chart for the decade of the Sixties — February 18, 1961 — we see Pluto-Node opposite Mercury.  Could this opposition suggest the Plutonian  upheavals that would mark the upcoming decade, and that would be widely communicated so that hardly anyone would not notice it?

ju1sa1980

The Eighties

In the conjunction chart for the Eighties, December 31, 1980, we see that conjunction square the Sun-Mercury conjunction. During the decade of the Eighties, the iron law of the market became more dominant in the world.  Perhaps the Saturn square the Sun presages this.

ju2sa1989

The Nineties

The opposition chart for the Nineties — September 19, 1989, just two months before the fall of the Berlin Wall — has the Saturn-Neptune conjunction opposite Jupiter, highlighting that conjunction that we have discussed previously.

ju1sa2000

The Aughts

The conjunction chart for the first decade of this century, on May 28. 2000 is most suggestive: The sun is opposite Pluto.  The next decade would be most Plutonian, with the US  approved “War on Terror”  making terror the watchword around the world, with many repressive regimes using the excuse of fighting terrorism — if it’s good for the US it is good for us may be their motto — allowing them to repress those considered undesirable.

ju2sa2010

The Teens

The Jupiter- Saturn opposition chart for this decade — May 23, 2010 — shows Jupiter and Uranus at the Aries point, opposite Saturn and the Moon, and Pluto is opposite Venus. For Jupiter-Uranus Ebertin says optimism, a lucky chance.  And  despite some depressing news of the day, in general many people, especially politicians in the United States, seem to be optimistic that we can escape the onrushing juggernaut that is known by the moniker “climate change” and that our lucky chance will allow us to avoid the unpleasant consequences of our own behavior.  But the opposition to Saturn should temper that optimism.  The next decade will show our folly.

ju1sa2020

The Twenties

The chart for the next decade — December 21, 2020 — occurs at the Winter Solstice, when the Sun is at zero Capricorn.  The other most obvious aspect is Mars  square Pluto with only a one degree orb.   This does not suggest a peaceful decade.  Many of the recent decade charts have had Pluto aspects.  Perhaps this suggests that this century will be very Plutonian, full of transformation.

Summer Solstice

I recently attended a Summer Solstice Ceremony held in a nearby community.  Part of the ceremony was an interpretation  of a chart for the moment when the sun was at zero Cancer — the Summer Solstice.  I had never looked at such a chart before, even though I had looked at a Capricorn Ingress chart for many, many years.

It is traditional among astrologers to look at ingress charts to gauge the upcoming year.  The most  common of these is the Capricorn  Ingress chart, since the ingress of the Sun into the sign of Capricorn — the official start of the Winter season — is near the beginning of the New Year in modern societies.   But since I was at this ceremony, I decided to also look at the Cancer Ingress chart,  and I was a bit surprised.  The hostess of the ceremony pointed out some interesting features of the chart, but her interpretation was a bit more “New Age” (appropriate considering the people gathered) than I would take.  But  I did see some things of interest for readers of this blog, and later I did a more in-depth interpretation of the chart.

sum_sols

Cancer Ingress – Summer Solstice

The first thing to note is that the Sun is conjunct Mars with an orb of less than two degrees.  This is especially of note since the position of the sun is fixed at zero degrees cancer.  Mars – Sun indicates violent, anger, warlike conditions.  Not very peaceful.  Lots of energy.  Not a suggestion that the next year will be calm and gentle.

The next thing I noticed was that Saturn was tightly square the Moon with an orb of less than 15 minutes.  Again, since the position of the moon is fixed because of the nature of the chart, this aspect with the moon is also important.  Moon-Saturn is depressed emotions or feeling on a personal level, or sad or constricted people on a nation level.  Doesn’t sound like a lot of joy.  But then notice the tight semi-square between Saturn and Pluto – orb less than three minutes.  We’ve seen before the problematic nature of hard combinations of Saturn and Pluto,  as in the start of the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the coup in Chile, and the 9/11 attacks.  Completing the triangle is Moon sesquiquadrate Pluto, also tight with an orb of under 15 minutes.  So this whole configuration of Moon, Saturn, Pluto  are quite close to exact, and since the personal point the Moon is involved, this Saturn-Pluto is involved with the people of the world, the people will feel the troubles that ensue.   And combine this which what was said above about Sun-Mars, and the near future seems like an explosive situation, though most likely in a figurative sense.

sum_sols4

Fourth Harmonic Cancer Ingress

In the fourth harmonic version of this event, we see that many planets are involved in the Moon-Saturn-Pluto complex.  There is what is called a “Mystic Rectangle” formation, which involves two oppositions, two sextiles (short side of the rectangle) and two trines (long sides of the rectangle).   The oppositions in this case are Moon-Saturn opposition Pluto and Venus opposite Sun.  You can see how wide the Sun-Mars conjunction is when stretched by a factor of four in this harmonic chart.  The sextiles are Sun-Pluto and Moon-Saturn-Venus.  The  trines are Pluto  Venus and Sun-Moon/Saturn.

In the two weeks since the start of Summer, we can already see this playing out.    What I  notice most strongly is the drama being played out between Europe (and especially Germany) and Greece.   As I write this, Greece had already defaulted in the money it owes the notorious IMF (International Money Fund).  The IMF was set up in the aftermath of World War II  to support financial cooperation among nations of the world, but it has acted as an extortionist for a long time.  The IMF is famous for the ravages — the demands that countries  undergo Structural Adjustment — it has laid on Central and South America during the decade of the Nineteen Eighties — the decade of the start of neolibralism in the world stage, the decade of Reagan and Thatcher, and it seems to be living up to its promise.  Germany and  Greece had difficulties during World War II, when the Nazis took over in Greece, and it appears that the post-Nazi German government is still intent on taking a bite out of Greece, and the Greek people have not forgotten World War II.

Greek Referendum

Here is a chart for Sunday, the day a referendum has be called in Greece to determine if they will remain with the austerity program.  In this chart Saturn is still semisquare Pluto, but now Sun is opposite Pluto and sesquiquadrate Saturn, so it looks like Sunday is another Plutonian day,   one in which the long knives come out.  Whatever the outcome of the referendum on Sunday, things won’t improve, at least not in the short term.

Those words were written before the vote in Greece.  Now, several days after, and with a large “No” vote, we can se the Plutonian repercussions around the world.  Some commentators a have said that the vote was the most important event in Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall.  It is certain to affect the political situation in many other members of the Eurozone, such as Spain, a well as the electorate in other countries such as the United States.   The vote is being seen as a large protest against the wave of neoliberalism that has swept the world since the late 1970s.

But of course other things are happening in the world.  The day before the referendum was the 239th birthday of the United States  and the beginning of a (very) long election season for the President of that country.   That country is currently roiled with church fires and the killing of black people; the justice system of the United States is coming under increasing criticism.  Extreme weather is attacking the West Coast of the US, and the major agricultural state California is seeing a news-worthy drought.  The Middle East is seeing wide spreading wars. At this rate who knows what the world will look like in another 14 months.

A Brief Look At 2016

The year 2016 is just a few months away, and I thought I’d take a look at the prominent astrological trends happening that year, especially as regards the United States.  2016 is the year we must pass through to reach the  end of the decade, and for the US it is important since it is an  election year, with no incumbents.

We have seen three elections recently that could shed light on how the populace feels about the state of their government.  In Greece, a election recently put the maverick Syriza party in power, and expressed the disgust of Greek citizens at the austerity that had been imposed upon their country by the European Union, and especially by Germany, the strongest country in the EU.  Then there was a recent election in  Alberta, a province in  Canada.  There, the New Democratic Party (NDP) was elected to full majority of seats, defying the Conservative Party that had always been the strongest in that province and also rules Canada.  Even more recently the election in Great Britain showed  a large majority (only in Scotland) voted for the Scottish National Party (SNP) which deprived the Labor Party of almost half the seats from Scotland and greatly reduced its strength in Great Britain.  In all these cases a third, and progressive-leaning, party took votes from the more established two parties in their respective countries.  Do these elections results cast any light on the upcoming US  Presidential election?   The  state of democracy is different in the United States.  There the political landscape is controlled by two dominant right wing parties (but of course the same could be more or less said about those other countries, though in no other country is the right so all-powerful as it is in the United States), though some believe that these two political parties are just two branches of the dominant Business Party, and third progressive parties have a difficult time since a vote for them and not a vote against one of the two dominant factions involves a leap of faith,  and needs large numbers of people to make the same choice at the same time, which requires trusting other people.  But that is unlikely to happened in the atomized society of the US.  So while the  election results in these three other countries may shed some light on the US  elections, that things won’t turn out nearly the same way seems more likely.

Note that I am ignoring the recent election results in the country of Israel since they are seemingly different.  In that country there was a concern with growing inequality, something that is felt in many other countries, but it was overruled by national security issues, they same as may be the case in the United States, since US citizens still  have a year for events to play out.

US Election 2016

One notably transit to the US chart is Saturn over the Ascendant of the US, lasting in the whole year and being exact three times during the year.  The symbolic  meaning of this would be depression in showing ones true self or possibly feeling inhibited.  To get a better idea,  let us look at the two previous conjunctions.

The last time Saturn was on the Ascendant of the United States was in 1986.  This was the second  half of President Ronald Reagan’s second term , and people we becoming disillusioned with “The Gippper” as he was affectionately called for his role as football player George Gipp in the movie Knute Rockne, All American about the famous football coach of Notre Dame University. A  secret operation now known as the Iran-Contra Scandal, was being played out from the White House.  This should have led to Reagan’s impeachment, but of course it was unknown to  the general public.  Then, on October 5 of that year the pilot Eugene Hasenfus was shot down over Nicaragua and the whole scheme came out.  Briefly, the US  was selling weapons to the embargoed country of Iran, that had released  its captured US embassy officials just as Reagan was being inaugurated,  and using the money raised to supply  arms for the CIA-backed paramilitary army trying to overthrow the government of Nicaragua against the will of Congress.  As a result of all this Americans belief in the sanctity of their country fell greatly.

Iran-Contra Revealed

In the chart for this shootdown we see that Saturn is approaching the Ascendant of the United States, and in fact  would reach that point by December.  Sun is conjunction Saturn — not a good time for US propaganda — and  Pluto is tightly sesquiquadrate Mars — war — as it had been for much of the year, and in fact America was engaged in a large scale war in Central America, though the public was kept in the dark about this fact.

The previous Saturn conjunct the Ascendant was in 1957.  This was in the midst of the Cold War and the President was World War II hero Dwight Eisenhower.  Americans believed their country was  far superior to the Soviet Union, even though the Soviets had tested an atomic bomb back in 1949.  Then, in August of that year, the Soviets tested the world’s first ICBM — Intercontinental Ballistic Missile — and suddenly it seemed that the Soviets could reach US shores with their atomic bombs despite US overwhelming superiority in submarine launched missiles and the many US bases surrounding the Soviet Union.   Then, on October 4 the world’s first artificial satellite was launched by the Soviet Union.  This again cast doubt on US superiority.  A few months later an attempted launch of a US  satellite failed to much embarrassment.  As a result of this, United States schools  were swept up in a huge urge to teach more science and math so US students could be competitive.  This  was an early preview of the current desire to teach the STEM — science, technology, engineering, math — in all the schools.

sputnik

Sputnik I

In  the chart for the launch of Sputnik, set for the proper time in the East coast (DST), we see Saturn is again approaching the Ascendant, and Sun is again near Saturn, which makes sense  since it was the same time of the year.  Transiting Jupiter is conjunct transiting Sun — Americans were optimistic about the future and their superiority to the Russkies, but this was about to  change.

Another important aspect is Neptune square the Ascendant of the US, which is  part  of a bigger complex that will come into play in the following years.  This Neptune square stars in the early spring of 2016, and by late spring we have  Saturn on the Ascendant and Neptune square the Ascendant, as   we can see in the next chart.  The Neptune square continues  through the summer, as Saturn crisscrosses the Ascendant, for the last time in early October.  As  we can see  for the Election Day chart below, Saturn is still close  to the Ascendant.  Perhaps the outcome of the election will not make Americans feel good about their country or themselves, unlike the election of 2008.  Also in late summer and early fall Pluto retrogrades so it is widely opposite the Sun of the United States,  a position it has occupies for much of the last few  years, as there has been increasing criticism of the President and the Congress is held at record low esteem.

Besides  the square of Neptune to the Ascendant 2016 will also see the trine of Neptune to the US Sun.  These three factors will be influence  the mood of the country during 2016.

The important Neptune aspects suggests, and from reading the news this is obvious, that the US will become  weed crazy in the following years.  The capitalists have begun to be interested in marijuana, and once the capitalists are involved it is difficult to  hold back.  Lenny Bruce, the acerbic comedian of the 1950s and 1960s, and a forerunner of many comedians today, once said that marijuana will become legal once the lawyers started smoking it.  In this he was wrong.  It now appears what pushed the envelope was some Baby Boomers started turning 65 and they realized they needed the aid of a plant they were familiar with when younger to help with the aches and pains they felt as the  grew older.  This coupled with a younger generation that was influenced by the drug war propaganda (but not in a positive direction) they got as young people tipped the balance, as  was mentioned by an earlier post.

The last time Neptune was in a similar position  was in 1853 and  1854, shortly after a Uranus-Pluto conjunction.  This   was a few years after Prohibition has been passed in the state of Maine (same link as above) and in began to spread to other states, ultimately culminating in the passage of  National Prohibition in 1919, which took place the next year.  This had a large affect on  the country, though I don’t know if everyone would consider it positive.  Among the many changers to the country was a widespread ignoring of the law, much corruption, and the rise a criminal gangs.

Saturn and Neptune in the US Chart

But these two aspects occur at the same time, as this next chart illustrates.  Here is one with Saturn square Neptune, with Saturn quite exactly on the Ascendant of the US and Neptune closely square the Ascendant of the US. We have discussed in the past the hard aspects of Saturn and Neptune, and here is yet another one.  This hard aspect is also closely connected to the US.  In this case this aspect suggests  that America   will realize that some policies or beliefs it has followed  are no longer serving the country.  We can already see this happening;  there are so many beliefs that are coming under scrutiny now, the list is long.  The  war on Drugs and  how the police interact with communities  is coming under increasing criticism as  people ask more and more questions.  These are even  spreading to the presidential campaigns of both Democrats and Republicans, while it has been a major topic of third parties for a long time.

mapl2016

Mars_Pluto Opposite Sun

A long term aspects, over the last few years, has been Pluto opposite the Sun of the United States.   This has lasted so long since Pluto moves so slowly.  The last exact pass  will be in the fall of this  year as goes stationary on the US Sun.  But there is one further close pass in October of next  year and, as  you can see from the  next chart, at this point Mars conjuncts Pluto.  While the opposition with the Sun is not exact, the square with the US  Saturn is very close.  This also accentuates the natal Sun square Saturn of the US.   As one can imagine, Sun-Mars combinations are not very pacific  — Ebertin gives the phrase “force, brutality”.  Pluto opposite the Sun has seen intense opposition to the President, and the government in general, over the last few years.  As evidence, if any is needed, just look at the low esteem those institutions are held by the populace, as shown in many polls.   With this final Mars-Pluto opposite the Sun in the  weeks before the election, one can  expect to see fervent opposition displayed in the country.

2016

Finally we have a graphical ephemeris for the entire year.  In this we can see  Saturn first crossing the Ascendant at the  beginning of the year, and then crossing it again in  June just as Neptune also squares the Ascendant (black  arrow) and then crossing it a third time in October (red arrow).  Meanwhile, we see the Uranus-Pluto square close at the beginning of the year and the Pluto and Mars conjunct near the US Sun later in October (green arrow).

Radical Change Coming

This is not a polemic:  I am not saying that the world needs a radical change to avoid some dire consequences.  I’m saying that a radical change is coming one way or another.  Being pro-flash-and-blood human, I would rather that this change be directed by human beings to have the most favorable outcomes for human beings that is possible.  But that may not be possible because of the dysfunction of the current terrestrial society.  But in any case the change will happen, and so  we should be prepared for it.

We have previously discussed the importance of midpoints involving the three outer planets — Uranus, Neptune,Pluto — in the outlook of the world.  These midpoints happen usually three times per century, and they represent a major change in the perspective of the world, a zeitgeist (German for spirit of the age) change.   After a midpoint, the world has changed so much that people born after have difficulty imagining that the world is any different that it currently is.  Those who were born long enough before the midpoint can remember what it was like, but things have changed so much they are no longer sure if that memory is not just a dream.

Since Uranus is the fastest moving of these three planets, it is the planet either found at the apex of the other two planets, written as Uranus = Neptune/Pluto, or forming a midpoint with the slowest moving planet, Pluto, at the apex.  Neptune is the least likely apex planet.  At least for the last 500 years, Uranus-apex midpoints have alternated with Pluto-apex midpoints.  The last time there was a Neptune-apex midpoint was in the third quarter of the Eighteenth Century — when the United States was being founded — but that was a special case since there was a  grand trine involving the three outer planets in that period so that all three planets were taking turns as the apex planet.  The previous  Neptune apex midpoint was some 500 years ago in the first decade of the Sixteenth Century.

There were three midpoint configurations in the Twentieth Century, and we have discussed them previously here, here, and here.  The  first one occurred in the first decade of the Twentieth Century, with Uranus at the apex point.  This decade represented a profound change in the world, especially the Western World, though in China they saw the end of the dynastic state that had lasted for millennia.  Automobiles became popular, the airplane was invented, new music and art developed , and life stared to hustle.   The second midpoint, with Pluto at the apex, was at the end of World War II; the most significant event at his time, and perhaps the most significant event of at least the last 500 years, was the dropping of two atomic bombs on the country of Japan.   The is the first time in human history that it was possible to believe that the world could actually be ended by human intervention,  This had profound implications for humanity and I don’t think that the ramifications have been fully recognized even 70 years later.  Many former colonies  got their freedom, and the Cold War, that shaped so much the last half of the Twentieth Century, and still shapes the world, saw its start.  The third midpoint, again with Uranus at the apex, happened at the end of the Seventies.  This midpoint saw the rise of market dominance, and an end to the previous 35 years when the well being of citizens was placed above the wants of the market.

Now that we have lived for 35 years under this zeitgeist we find it hard to remember a different time.  Notice that each midpoint change does not wipe out the changes that the previous midpoint brought, but rather added  to them.  Thus the change at the end of WW II did no negate automobiles and airplanes, but rather added its own changes.  And the midpoint at the end of the Seventies did not do away with the changes wrought by the atomic bomb, but added its own changes onto of those that already existed.  Thus the world in the opening decades of the Twenty-First Century is an amalgam of the changes that happened under the previous three zeitgeist changes.

As one can imagine, sooner or later there will be a midpoint configuration in the  21st century, and we will wonder what it will bring .  That is always a good guessing game, and we can make guesses based on what we see is the world as it is now.  Also keep in mind, as has been discussed in in the About section of this blog, as well as here. we have reached the end of a 500  year cycle — the 500 Year Party — and so things are going to change in a very large way.  The changes the world will see over the next 500 years are an end to capitalism, industrialism, and rationalism.  The life the world has known for the last 500 years is going to come to an end.  The last 500 years, half of a millennium, have seen  the exploration and conquest of the world by European powers, the Scientific and Industrial  Revolutions, the beginnings of leaving the planet, the atomic bomb, the massive growth of the world population, and all the concomitant changes that are summarized by the term 500 year party.  Thus one  would expect that the upcoming midpoint would represent a larger change — if that can be imagined — than the previous three zeitgeist changes of the Twentieth Century.

The  upcoming midpoint configuration is Neptune at the apex point, and it is a long lasting one.  This midpoint starts to get within orb in 2021 and is last within orb in 2029, so it lasts for most of the third decade of this century.  This is unusual, since the midpoint of the previous century lasted three or four years.  Uranus is the fastest moving planet, so when it is the apex planet the midpoint is quickly over

Midpoint Start

The chart above shows the midpoint in 2023  when it has just started.  We will see later, when we compare this midpoint to the United States chart, that it actually stated two years earlier but was only barely in orb during that period.

sex20

Mini-Grand Trine

But wait, there’s more.  Not only are these three planet forming a midpoint, but they also form an aspect pattern, as seen in the next chart.  The aspect pattern, with a trine, sextile, and sextile, has been called a “mini-grand trine” (a grand trine is an equilateral triangle consisting of three trines between the planets, which  we last saw in the Eighteenth Century).  This makes the midpoint patten even stronger, because not only is it a midpoint with Neptune at the apex, but it is a mini-grand trine with Neptune at the apex.

ne_ar

Neptune at Aries Point

But wait, there’s more.  Not only is this a long lasting midpoint configuration, but for part of the time the apex planet — Neptune — is on the Aries point, as we can see in the next chart.  The Aries point, and those points square or opposite it — 0 Cancer, 0 Libra, 0 Capricorn — are the connection points with the world at large.  When a planet make a connection with the Aries point, whatever is represented by that planet, and in this case a midpoint, will affect the whole world.  In this case, it makes the midpoint even more significant.  I can speculate that Neptune on Aries represents the Reenchantment of the World (suggested, by among others, Morris Berman in the book of that name).  It is something we have long needed.

sane_ar

Saturn Neptune Conjunction at Aries Point

But wait, there’s more.  For  a  year, when the midpoint’s apex planet Neptune is on the Aries point, Saturn is conjunct Neptune, as shown in the next  chart. Saturn-Neptune conjunctions (squares, oppositions) are very complex and important .  We have discussed this combination over the last month.  Briefly, Saturn-Neptune indicates a long time behavior  that at one time seemed like a good idea, but now its failure is glaringly obvious.  The fact that the conjunction takes place at the Aries point, and is the apex of the midpoint involving two of the outer planets  makes it even more important.  The entire world feels that its previous behavior is no longer worth pursuing.

But wait, there’s more.  Because the planets are sextile Neptune at the time that Neptune changes sign — from Pisces to Aries — the other two outer planers are also changing signs at the same time, with Pluto changing from Capricorn, where it is now, into Aquarius, and Uranus changing from Taurus to Gemini, so that afterwards all the three outer planets are in positive signs.   The change of an outer planet into a new sign is considered significant and books have been written about this phenomenon through the ages (for example, The Astrology of Sustainability by J. Lee Lehman, PH.D.) so one can expect that the changes of all three other planets to new signs at the same time would be triply noteworthy.

Four Outer Planets Change Signs

In  this 5 years graphical ephemeris in harmonic 6, we can see that first Pluto changes sign — red arrow — and then Neptune changes sign — green arrow — and then Saturn and Uranus change signs — between blue and black arrows.    You can see how the three outer planets maintain their dance during this period, with the last exact mini-grand trine shown by the yellow arrow.

Saturn Neptune with US

But wait, there’s more.  Since the US is connected with the Aries point – -the IC is at 1 Aries and so the Midheaven is at 1 Libra, this whole configuration is thus connected to the IC and MC of the United States, so the US will be deeply involved in the changes signified by all these aspects and happening in the third decade, five  years away, of the Twenty-First Century. This is shown in the above chart.

urneplmc_tgzoom

United States Midheaven Activity

In this magnified graphical ephemeris we can see how those three outer planets plus Saturn come close to the MC of the United States when they are all in aspect to each other.  Remember that in this sixth harmonic graphical ephemeris, where the transiting lines are close together,  either a conjunction, trine, or sextile is occurring, and when near the MC of the US these aspect are all less than one degree, as shown in the vertical scale.

tg_uppl_10yr

Uranus-Pluto Midpoint over 10 Years

In this 10 year graphical ephemeris we can see how Neptune and the Uranus-Pluto midpoint are close together for the entire 10 years, with the closest at the center vertical line of 3/24/2025.  At this point both lines also cross the Aries axis, the horizontal solid black line.

mpstart

mpend

Midpoint End on US Chart

But wait, there’s more.  Here are two more charts illustrating the start and the end of the midpoint on  the United States chart.  Again, you can see that the midpoint lasts for nine years, from 2021 to 2029.  As we mentioned above, Neptune transits the IC of the United States during this period.  And as you can see from the second chart directly above, at the end of the period Uranus transits the Descendant of the US.  As discussed  many months ago when Neptune transits the Midheaven axis, either end, and Uranus transits the Descendant, the  United States engages in war.  I’ve  suggested  previously that the war in this case will be a world wide attempt to  save the world.  This is further evidence that this period —  the third decade of the Twenty-First Century — will see a major change in the behavior of the world’s people.

mp_usa20

Midpoints on the US MC

There is also a midpoint configuration  with Uranus_Pluto to the Midheaven of the United States,  with the Saturn-Nptune conjunction also making a midpoint to the MC.

ursqrmo

Uranus Square US Moon

But wait, there’s more.  There is one other idea we discussed previously that is relevant to this period.  When Uranus make a   quadrature aspect — conjunction, square,  opposition — to the Moon of the United States, the people get agitated and often a war results.  As can be see in the above chart, a square between Uranus and the US Moon occurs in the period 2024-25.   This is one more indication that something interesting will happen in this period.

2025

In The Year 2025

Finally, here is  a chart with all the planets within the US chart, for August, 8, 2025.  There is a kite — grand trine and mini-grand trine with Mars on the US MC and opposite Saturn-Neptune — the spine of the kite.  The transiting Sun is semisquare Mars and sesquiquadrate Saturn-Neptune.  Mercury is opposite the Moon-Pluto conjunction.  There is a Venus-Jupiter conjunction and Jupiter is almost exactly conjunct the US Sun.

So the big question is “What will this change be?”  Not being psychic, I don’t know, but we can make some educated guesses.  One possibility is we would see a world controlled by major corporations, and the leader of the dominant military power in the world would be sending robot missiles around the world to kill people who he (or she)  doesn’t like, possibly planning the kills for a week on each Thursday (and calling them Terror Thursdays) while spy agencies for major powers find a way to spy on every cell phone call, email, or computer, and the leader would make rhetoric for liberal sounding nostrums to cheers his (or her) supporters while he (or she) tried to pass a bill giving complete control of the world to the dominant corporations.   Now I’m sure we can all agree that it is very difficult to imagine such a hopeless scenario, and that the citizens of the United States would never stand of such a thing, so let’s explore a more positive possibility.

As we discussed before, we are at the end of the 500-Year party.  Many  trends in the world are reaching a limit, or have already passed them.  In the United States there are two dominant political parties that are weighing in on this situation.  One, the realists, see the situation as  so dangerous to their world view that they choose the ostrich outlook to the problems, just deny  them.  The other political faction thinks that there is something happening here, but what it is ain’t exactly clear, so they believe that market-based solutions will solve the problems and that the economy can continue to grow.  This is the rearrange the  deckchairs on the Titanic approach. Neither of these approaches will avoid radical changes, but I don’t think they will like the results of such a change.

As for what a radical changes will look like, here are three suggestion that will indicate the scope of the problem:

In  the early part of the Twentieth Century, under the influence of a Uranus-Neptune opposition, the automobile was developed as a  fixture of society.  Its influence has only spread in the century since then.  In the decade of the 1990s, under a Uranus-Neptune conjunction, another fascination was developed for the World Wide Web, and its influence has only spread since then.  So imagine what the dilemma society will be in if they are offered the choice: Automobiles or the Internet, the world can only support one — your choice.

Some scientists suggests that we need to stop moving around as much as we have grown accustomed to.  The airplane, which is becoming increasingly popular (also developed during the Uranus-Neptune opposition in the first decade of the Twentieth Century), is notorious from  abusing the atmosphere.  What if the world realized it must use dirigibles rather than airplanes for those trips  that can not be accomplished by land or sea travel?

What if the United States were to split up into several separate countries, in which case each new country would have its own birthchart and Constitution to replace the terribly outmoded Constitution of the current United States, and a birthchart that damns us to certain behavior.  We all realize that the United is already several separate countries, based on history and location.  The Northeast and the South are different and fact fought a war over this difference.  The West Coast states, the Midwest, the Rocky Mountain area, and the former industrial heartland south of the Great Lakes  are also obviously different.  Unfortunately they all have to work together, even though they see the world differently.  These ideas are discuss in depth in The Nine Nations of North America (Joel Garreau) and American Nations (Colin Woodard).

Of course, there are other possible meanings of this configuration that is coming up in less than ten years, I merely suggested ones that seem reasonable at this time.  But of course things can change in the next few year.  Expect many black swans.  We may see an invasion from outer space, a collision with an asteroid, a nuclear war.  But whatever happens,  the world will change radically in the next quarter century.  I  see an image of a runaway  chariot and the riders — the people of the earth — must gain control of the reins and slow the runaway chariot.  It won’t be easy, and will require a massive change in consciousness as well.  We will look at indications of this for the next ten years at future dates.

Election 2014

Since everyone else is weighing in on the upcoming election in the United States in November, I thought I might as well too, using the lens of astrology. There appear to be two contradictory messages from the election day chart; I think it should be a very interesting election.

election_14_tg1

Pluto-Uranus on US Sun

The major thing that colors this whole period is shown in the first chart, a graphical ephemeris for 2012 the 2017. It shows the transiting Pluto going back and forth over the natal Sun (yellow dashed horizontal line near the top) of the United States. The last time this happened was before the US birth, that is before the Declaration of Independence. This was a time about 1766 to 1771 when the British were trying to get money from the colonists through such measures as th Townsend Act (1767) and the Stamp Act (1765) that led to such things as the Boston Massacre (March 1770) and ultimately to the American Revolution, as shown in the second chart.

election_14_tg0

Before the Revolutionary War – Pluto opposite Sun of US

While I am not suggesting that there will be another American revolution, I am saying there wlll be a lot of animosity towards those institutions represented by the Sun. When the country was a colony of England, the Sun represented the King of England and the British government. Now that the US has “self-rule” the Sun represents the President and the government. And right now, those institutions are not very popular with the people, as many polls show. I saw recently that the imaginary character Darth Vader is more popular than any potential or real President, as well as the Congress.

election_14_1

The election chart is set for election day, but I chose the time of 12:29 since at that time the transiting Moon is exactly conjunct transiting Uranus (black arrow), suggesting a time of upset or of “revolution”.

In this chart not only is Pluto opposite the US Sun (green arrow), but Pluto is conjunct transiting Mars (red arrow), which is opposite the US Jupiter. Pluto Mars conjunctions are connected with, to put it mildly, extreme anger. This conjunction will be building up in the week following the election.

Of course, there is the transiting Uranus square transiting Pluto which has been going on for several years now; this aspect has marked this as a decade of upset, unrest, and violence, and you can see it in the daily headlines from Iraq to Israel to Ukraine and of course in the US to a lesser extent.

And since Pluto is opposite the Sun then we have Uranus square the Sun (blue arrow), putting even more pressure on the central government. But notice the both Uranus and Pluto are semisquare the Moon (yellow, aqua arrows) of the United States, and also, self evidently, the Moon is at the Midpoint of Uranus/Pluto. We have a whole lot of Uranus Pluto happening. This suggests sudden revolt. People are angry at what has been done to them by forces beyond their control, and here is a chance for them to express that anger. In the United States people don’t so much vote for a candidate as vote against a candidate by voting for the other candidate, and in the two-party system of the United States, this leaves few choices.

To further suggest the rebellious nature of the election, the Moon-Uranus conjunction is trine the Ascendant and opposite the natal Saturn. Saturn and Uranus have two opposing principles: Saturn represents conformity and the safe path, while Uranus represents rebellion and the more risky path. Thus the opposition is conflict between the old and the new. When these two planets/principles are opposed in the sky, we get conflict between rebellion and safety. Two examples: this opposition happened in 1919 when the Palmer raids (fighting Quaker Attorney General Mitchell Palmer) started. This period in the United States is often called the First Red Scare; just after World War I there was a series of bombing supposedly by foreign anarchists, there were a lot of deportation, such as Emma Goldman, the Sacco-Vanzetti event and trial occurred, and Eugene Debs, who was jailed under the Espionage Act (yes, the same one being used today to jail whistle-blowers) ran for President from his cell. Another example was the “Credibility gap” of 1966 where many voters got upset with the current President Lyndon Johnson and the true depth of the Vietnam war was realized. Based on these ideas, I’m guessing that this opposition, even though one planet is natal, will be similar. We already have a new “Red Scare”; even though the Communist party does not rule in Russia these days we have their leader – Vladimir Putin – which we can demonize as much, and possibly more, that any of the former leaders of the Soviet Union.

But then there is another theme shown in this chart. There is a transiting Sun-Venus (white arrow) conjunction, which is not bad at all, trine the natal Sun, and the transiting Mercury square (brown arrow) the natal Mercury and sesquiquadrate (crimson arrow) the natal Uranus. In the entry about the Brown v Board of Education Supreme Court ruling, we said that the Mercury semisquare Uranus is part of a very pervasive belief that the US is a innovative, revolutionary country, and we showed how Neptune, at the same place Mercury is in this chart, accentuated that belief. The presence of Mercury for the elections in the same place as Neptune for the Supreme Court decision suggests that that this elections will also be about reaffirming the essential progressive nature of the US.

Thus there are two, very different themes expressed in this chart for the US election on November 4, 2014. One suggests rebellion and the other suggests that American is an exceptional country. Again, I think that the election will be interesting. One way of combining the two themes that I thought of is that America will be rebellious in this election, there will be some upsets, but finally people will conclude that this behavior shows that America is still a rebellious country, and this election shows the best in America, though the initial take will not be that generous.
